Sterling Silver Russian Empire Vintage Menorah Candelabra Sotheby's 18k Comp:
This is an exquisite, ornate, vintage solid sterling silver menorah / candelabra. It is 25 inches tall. It was made in 1896, as you can see in its mark; it is marked 84 for silver. The total weight is 1 kg, or 426 gr. But this menorah is not being sold based on weight, but rather as an antiqueAccording to my client, the piece was made in Poland and the silver marking is from Eastern Europe. It was made 1896 by a Polish silversmith in Russia (that part of Poland was part of the Russian Empire at the time), so it is Russian silver according to the mark. About 20 years ago, a similar candelabra by the same silversmith was sold in a Sotheby’s sale for $18,000.
That menorah was sold in Sotheby’s in approximately 1997-2001 in New York City. It was featured in their catalogue in those years, but we cannot locate the book at the moment.Antique dealers at the time said that only few of these menorahs were made at the time (about five).
