This is a gorgeous French Antique Boule French box filled with what appear to be antique Mah Jong game pieces. It has engraved in the Boulle brass inlay the words, \"Souvernir, 1Janvier, 1888,\" so we assume that is when it was made. The box is just beautiful with veneers of burl, kingwood, and ebony plus inlays of mother of pearl along with brass stringing on the top and sides. Inside it is lined with rosewood and it has one lift out tray divided into five sections. It has a working lock with a skeleton key (possibly original) and brass hinges.
The Mah Jong pieces ( There are 98) may not be a full set but we are not at all familiar with the game. The pieces appear to be made of perfectly fitted bamboo and a non-synthetic, bone like material. Two of the Mah Jong pieces are cracked but the rest appear to be in perfect condition. The box is in extremely good condition but has some drying cracking around the bottom edge with some of the burl veneer cracked or missing. The damage is visible in the photos. The box measures 8 3/8 inches wide by 8 3/16 long. It is 3 3/8 high and weighs nearly 5 popunds with the game pieces.Be sure to look closely at the Boulle and inlay work on the top of this box. It is so uncommon to find one of these without cracking of the veneers or inlay damaged with missing peices. This one is nearly perfect. We thought it a simply stunning gift idea, either for yourself, or for someone very special.. A box such as this would be a treasure in any executive suite.
