Fiorello La Guardia (1882-1947) signed this typed letter in 1943 to Mr. Leopold Philipp, the president of the Uptown Chamber of Commerce, informing him of the upcoming visit of Madame Chiang Kai-shek and requesting his presence in “official ceremonies in honor of the First Lady of China”.
La Guardia was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for over 10 years, but he is best known as a three-term mayor of New York City (1934-1945). He was a fervent supporter of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, and with the help of federal funding, he was able to revitalize New York City and build faith in the city’s government by defeating the Tammany Hall political machine.
Madame Chiang Kai-Shek, or Soong Mei-Ling (1898-2003) was the wife of Chinese President Chiang Kai-shek. She played a prominent role in the politics of China and was known for her social welfare projects such as her efforts to establish schools and orphanages for the orphans of Chinese soldiers. She visited the United States numerous times and spent the last few years of her life on Long Island and her Upper East Side apartment.
Typed on the first page of the mayor’s official stationery that measures 8 ¼” x 5 ¼”.
Condition: Fold lines, two hole punches at left margin, otherwise in very good condition with a large, bold signature.
