We have a really attractive piece here. It is a 20mm farthing, D&H-1118. Front shows a kneeling slave in chains with AM I NOT A MAN AND A BROTHER. Back is inscribed ADVOCATES FOR THE RIGHTS OF MAN, THOs SPENCE / SIR THOs MORE / THOs PAINE.
This is the second nicest of this type I\'ve ever had (just sold the nicest recently). This one is in high grade with excellent color and surfaces with tinges of original orange luster peeking through on the reverse. Lovely piece!
We note anti-Paine and pro-Paine tokens were very popular here in the U.S. in the 1790s. John Adams and Alexander Hamilton used to carry anti-Paine tokens (hanging tokens) as pocket pieces. On the other hand, Thomas Jefferson and George Clinton carried pro-Paine tokens.
These Paine tokens are the earliest, true American political items and are collected side by side with George Washington Inaugural buttons and the like. Here is a chance to obtain an unmessed with, high grade example that can be really enjoyed.
I visited Smithsonian, NPG, recently and took this photo of Thomas Paine. This is a small painting, smaller than copy paper. No, you don\'t get this painting with the token; it is not a part of this sale.
