M1859 Civil War Bridle Bit Rare U.S Boss Cavalry Military McClellan saddle:

Authentic Model 1859 Civil War Officers bit with the rare U.S bosses. Unlike the more common boss, these are separated with a square dot at the base between the letters U and S.
The bit is in very good condition for its 150 plus years. there is a minimum of surface rust, and the original makers name, and his business location are stamped into the outside of one shank, near the top. I can only make out the following - - BALD--IT, but beneath that, in smaller letters, I can clearly read NEWARK N J. I have found no evidence of breaks or repairs anywhere on the bit, and the only fault I can find is that one of the bosses will move slightly to the side when pressed in that direction. The original brass pin is still there. On the inside of one shank is very clearly stamped the number 2. It would indicate the size of the bit.
Although there is some light rusting, it is minimal for a bit of this period. Difficult as it is to find a bit of this age and this history in good condition, it is even rarer to find the original curb chain hooks, one of which is still firmly attached to one side.
