The pictures do not do it justice. It is a very powerful and unique mask that Janice has put so much thought into. Such detail of the child with his hands clutching the cedar bark rope umbilical cord which is also attached to the mother. So tastefully done and reminds us of the bond between a mother and child that can never be broken. Abalone eyes have been inlayed for the eyes and horse hair has been added to enhance the mask further.
It is 20" in height 11 1/2" in width and 8" in depth. With horse hair it is an astonishing 44" in height.
Born in Merrit B.C. in 1952, of Salish/Cree parents. Janice and her family moved to Vancouver during teenage years and to her great fortune into the same native Co-op building as the legendary master carver Oppie Oppenheim. He quickly took her into apprenticeship after seeing her original designs and over the course of three years became adept at carving both wood and jewelry. Her artistic career gave way to her devotion of her twochildren for fifteen years. The second great artistic influencecame into her life at this point in the person of herhusband and internationally renownedCoast Salish artist Randy Stiglitz.
