Vintage 1918-1922 Martin Made Ditson Style 1 Soprano Ukulele

DISCLAIMER: Please read the description carefully, and study the photos closely because they are both important parts of my description. Thanks. Mojo

OVERVIEW: Here is an old C.F. Martin-made ukulele that is ready to play. It needs nothing. PLEASE NOTE: In real life the uke is darker and browner than the photos depict.

MARTIN-DITSON: In the early days Martin made ukuleles for other companies, most notably the Ditson Companies. There was Oliver Ditson in Boston and Charles Ditson in New York. This ukulele has both the Boston and New York stamps. According to the 2013 Tom Walsh & John King book, THE MARTIN UKULELE, \"These Ditson ukuleles were identical to the early Martin ukuleles, with the exception of the stamps used.\"

AGE: Martin first started to make ukuleles for Ditson in 1918. By 1923 Martin stamped their own name inside the soundhole. Since this uke has the Ditson stamp inside the soundhole, it had to have been made between 1918 and 1922. This is an early uke and in the next year or so, this uke will be a genuine antique at 100 years old. BTW: this early uke weighs a mere 8.5 ounces!

WOOD: The top, sides, back, and neck are made of mahogany. The fingerboard is rosewood. The nut and saddle are ebony. I love these early Martins because the binding is made of 3-ply wood, not plastic.

PLAYABILITY: The uke is ready-to-play. It needs nothing. The action seems just right at a hair over 3/32\" at the 12th fret, and the wooden pegs turn easily and hold when tuned to pitch. A new set of Worth Fluorocarbon strings were just installed.

CONDITION: This uke was played and it shows wear, dings, doinks, scratches, scuffs, and even some gouges on the peghead. The finish has some very light checking in some places. There is only one extremely tight crack which measures about 1.5\" on the back. The crack is tight, it does not move and personally I would just leave it. The old-style bar frets have no wear and are in good condition, but they are protruding a hair at the edges. The nut and bridge are also in good, ready-to-go condition. The inside of the uke is clean as a whistle.

THE CASE: The chipboard case is not original and is probably from the 1950s. There are two areas where the edge of the lid has torn. The hinges and latches work well. SHIPPING DETAILS:

HOW THE SHIPPING COST IS DETERMINED:
When creating an sale listing, provides a “template” that deals strictly with the shipping cost. The seller (me) simply enters the package dimensions, weight, and carrier into the template, and then the Shipping Calculator automatically figures out how much the shipping cost will be for the buyer (you) depending on your zip code. Every potential buyer will see a different shipping cost depending on how close or how far they are located from Massachusetts. Because this shipping amount is automatically generated, I have absolutely no control over what cost is shown to you. In fact, I don\'t even know what the cost is that you are seeing. I NEVER make a profit on shipping, and only charge the ACTUAL COST to the buyer. I will even send you a shipping refund if the “actual” shipping turns out to be less than what you were charged.
