ITEM: You are offerding on an antique original lot of 11 early twentieth century Flag Cigarette Silks by Nebo and Zira Cigarettes. This sale includes Flags and crests from the countries of Montenegro, Germany, Schotland, Japan, Egypt, Austria, Holland, Switzerland and New Portugal. Additional text reads "Factory No. 7, 5th District N.J." The silk fabric is strong and sturdy with vibrant colors throughout.These sort of silks were first introduced in the Victorian era after cigar manufacturers began wrapping bundles of cigars with brightly colored silk ribbons imprinted with their brand names. The cigarette companies used the Tobacco silks to encourage brand loyalty, by hoping that wives would persuade their husbands to purchase cigarettes based on the silks they offered. They were printed in a wide variety of motifs and offered as premiums in cigarette packs. Series of these silks were developed to promote collecting, and often the Tobacco companies encouraged women to make things using the fabrics such as quilts, pillow tops and table covers. In parlor homes everywhere, men smoked while their wives fashioned the colorful fabric swatches into comforters, table scarves, clothes and more.
