Upfor offer is a nice little document that lists the progeny of Noah and Elizabeth Emery from Exeter, New Hampshire. It lists 7 of their children--Noah, Leonice (sp?), Susannah, Richard, Sherri, Enoch, and Shem. On the reverse it gives the dates that Susannah, Richard, and Shem \"dide.\" Found some information about this family. It appears that there were at least 4 generations of Noah Emerys that lived in Exeter, NH and Kittery, Maine. I found an extensive history of the Emery family on the Internet Archive website. Part of the text follows. This might be the father of the Noah Emery mentioned in this document. Size = 6\" X 2.5.\" It was evidently tucked into a family bible.Noahwas in the last year of the seventeenthcentury. He was bred to the trade of a cooper, but it seems the round ofhoop and cask was too narrow for his ambition. He aspired to a higher and wider sphere of activity, and as he grew to maturity turned his attention to the law. In1725 he was admitted to the bar bytaking the required oath of office. Hebecame a \" practitioner in thecourts,\" as he styles himself in a certain deed He thus attained thedistinction of being, says Willis,\" the first lawyer who ever residedin the State of Maine.\" Hissubsequent career proved that he had notmistaken his calling. \" He possessed much legal acumen and accuracy,\"continues the writer just cited ; and hegoes on to add that he was \" aready draftsman, of quick perceptionsand considerable ability which gave him an extensive practice.\" He wasrepeatedly commissioned as King\'s Attorney for the Province of Maine.

Theold lawyer appears also to have been a military man of some local consequence.A muster roll, yellow with age, now before me, has this title : \" List ofOfficers and soldiers in the upper foot company in Kittery under the command ofCaptain Noah Emery taken at Kittery on the 2 2d day of April 1756.\" The ensign of this companywas Caleb Emery, and there were eight other Emerys among the rank and file. It looks almost likethe case of a patriarch commanding household troops, and favors the traditionthat there was a place thereabouts whichwas anciently called \" Emerytown.\" Another scrap of old writing ofthat date connects Captain Emery withSir William Pepperrell, then in chief command of the military forces of the State.
