This listing is for a pair of coins with incredible history, a Spanish Eight Reale and a Two Reale Silver coin from the Shipwreck of the El Cazador.

The Two and Eight Reales are dated 1783 and were minted in Mexico City, Mexico under Assayers F F.

The Assayers were Francisco de le Pena and Francisco Arance Cobos.

They are in poor condition, due to spending 200+ years in sea water!

This pair of coins has been certified by NGC as Genuine Shipwreck coins and as treasure from the wreckage of the El Cazador.

This is a great opportunity to add a pair of certified and slabbed silver coins that are from one of the most import shipwrecks ever discovered!

The Eight Reales coins are also known as Pieces of Eight or as Spanish Milled Dollars.

The Two Reales were equal to a Quarter in United States currency.

During this time a quarter was also known at Two Bits.

The 8 Reales coins were in use in the 13 Colonies and were recommended by Thomas Jefferson as an official silver dollar for the United States.

They were accepted and were legal tender in the United States until 1857.

This is also the design that the United States used when producing Silver Dollars.

The El Cazador set sail from Vera Cruz, Mexico for New Orleans on January 11, 1784.

She was carrying thousands of silver coins to stimulate the Spanish holdings in the New World.

After a month at sea, the El Cazador sank, taking with it, the precious cargo and hundreds of lives.

This was a disastrous blow for Spain. It could not produce enough silver coins to stabilize the economy in New Orleans.

Sixteen years later, in 1800, Spain agreed to cede Louisiana back to France.

Three short years later, the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France for 3 cents an acre. This purchase doubled the size of our nation.

The history behind these coins is amazing and it would be a fantastic addition to a coin collection.
