1785 BAR CENT
This unglamorous bar cent is undated and of uncertain origin. It has thirteen parallel and disconnected bars on one side. On the other side is the large Roman USA monogram.
The significance of the design is clearly defined by its extreme simplicity. The separate thirteen states (bars) unite into a single status as symbolized by the interlocking letters (USA). This coin is believed to be issued at the same time as the Nova Constellation coppers by Thomas Wyon of Birmingham, England. It first circulated in New York in 1785. The design was supposedly copied from an old Continental button.
