1786 ConnecticutCopper. Miller 2.1-A, small Baby Headtype obverse, with a reverse reading ETLIB INDE instead of the correct INDEETLIB. Rarity-3 or so. Very Fine, rather high in that grade level interms of strike and wear. Everythingbold and sharp for the grade, including the legends, design details and eventhe tiny date. Medium brown, thesurfaces hard and with some gloss even though there are light marks fromcirculation on either side. HOLED andsomewhat crudely plugged at the top of the obverse, done in a place where itaffects none of the legends and barely grazes the back of the seated figure’shair. PAINTED DIE VARIETY on the obversein white ink, right below the plug – the handwriting not looking like any ofthe known 19th and early 20th century collectors, andperhaps a newer addition to the coin. The present example is from a collectorwho has a fascination with holed coins, and comes with his annotatedenvelope. It is surprising how manycolonial and early American coins were holed – but when one considers that mosttrousers at the time did not have pockets, some of the holed coins oneencounters today were probably holed in order to carry safely – a coin purse orsatchel would have been an easy thing to steal or lose! Other coins were holed for jewelry or buttonpurposes (the latter a big fad in the late 18th century), while otherswere nailed to a newly-raised barn or other building as a good luck charm, inthe way that a horseshoe might be placed today – given the location of the holeon this one, as well as the good state of preservation, we suspect it was donefor something like this, in a position where the coin itself was protected fromthe elements. There is a lot of historyto these holed pieces, some are definitely worthy of study by folklorists!
