1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 17g.3.Rarity-3. Choice Fine, somereverse details closer to the VF level, but with areas of weak strike on eitherside make Fine a better grade level. Theobverse has a bold AUCTORI, CON is mostly gone and NEC is there but weaker; thebust is very weak – if this detail were a bit sharper the coin would merit afull VF grade. The reverse is stronger, the legend full and bold (though the date is mostly off the planchet, ascentered), and the seated figure shows near VF detail in her dress, as well asthe full branch in her hand. Medium, somewhat dull brown with pinkish undertones, a coin that was probably cleanedat some point in the past, though now nearly fully retoned. A few trivial circulation marks, as expectedfor the grade level, and just a small bit of surface roughness, but no realglaring damage or defect. Overall apleasing, circulated example. Thisgeneral type is pictured and listed on Page 62 of the 2013 edition of TheRedbook [which has had massive pricing updates, and is now FAR more accuratethan it ever has been, even though it resulted in lowering of prices for manycommon type coins!] (Draped Bust Facing Left type), where Fine’s are listed at$90 and full VF’s at $250, though that does not take into account the rarity ofindividual varieties; this is offered here WITH . The newly-published book on colonials by Q.David Bowers, the Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins, lists this type as his W-3040 (page 143), where the variety is priced with onlywith the Ford coin mentioned above.Winning buyer to add $4 for postage and insurance – ALL items we sellare sent via insured mail [or Registered mail for items over $500].
