1799 Letter from USS General George Washington Sailor Rare Quasi-War Document
Amazing letter from a sailor on board the first USS General George Washington, dated November 23, 1799.
The sailor, Seaburg Sowle, writes his family that he is sick but will feel better once dispatched for Turks island.
Shortly after this letter was written, the USS George Washington was involved in the Quasi War against France and
met up with the USS United States and USS Constitution December 29, 1799 near the Dominican Republic and recaptured
2 American ships before returning home.
The sailor tells his family that he will probably see them soon in Newport. He most likely did on June 12, 1799 when his ship arrived to port.
Pic related is of Seaburg\'s twin brother Cornelius, mentioned in the letter. He was the captain of the Palmyra and island was named after his ship which was wrecked there.
