1852 $10 Eagle Kossuth Gaming Counter Token R-7 Rare:
1852 $10 Eagle Gaming Counter Rarity-7
We have a rare gold counter struck in brass here. Fauver writes this counter was struck following Kossuth's visit to the U.S. during 1851-1852. He lists it as catalog number Eagle-1105 / Kossuth-1005 and rates it R-7 (Fuld/Rulau-Kos 5, Kurth 67, Bushnell 16).
This counter measures 27mm (same size as a then current $10 gold coin). It is in higher grade with nice color and surfaces. A counter, such as this piece is, has cross-over merits to gold coin collectors, Hungarian coin collectors, gaming and gambling piece collectors, and to token collectors in general.
These counters were used in games of chance before, during, and after the Civil War and were very popular with soldiers in camps. Good one!
