Correspondence archive of more than a dozen items relating to the possible building of a railroad line through Ironton Ohio. All written to William H Enochs. First scan shows the entire lot, Other scans show the items chronologically as follows:

A1: Undated and empty envelope with corner card for the Norfolk & Western Railroad Co. Opened rough at right.

A2: May 11, 1886. 2 page letter on the letterhead of N W Evans, attorney and counselor at law of Portsmouth Ohio, relates to value of land held by William P Bard (some browning and fold erosion, also a supplemental sheet noting 3 different values for parts of the and noting some is owned by the Scioto Valley Railway.)

B1: February 21, 1889. 2 page letter on N&WRR Letterhead from Roanoke Virginia from W W Coe, chief engineer, about trying to get the Helca Iron & Mining co to move their right of way to the west side of the county road, and about land in control of the Trustees of the Campbell Estate. With transmittal envelope.

B2: March 16, 1889. 1 page letter on N&WRR Letterhead from Philadelphia Pennsylvania from S J Kimball, president, thanking Enochs for his letter about oending suits and noting that \"Mr Coe starts within a day or two for a trip over the line of our projected extension to Ironton.\" With transmittal envelope

C1: March 23, 1889. Short note on N&WRR Letterhead from Roanoke Virginia from a General Manager with poor writing thanking Enochs for the Railroad map of Ohio. With transmittal envelope.

C2: March 27, 1889. 2 page letter on the letterhead of the Alger House in Catlettsburg Kentucky, from J S Mitchell. Apparently an attempt to get the N&W to build on the Kentucky side: \"I have had a good many interviews with our citizens in regard to your Road passing through this place. I have no doubt if the proposition is submitted to our people to construct the road on the River front (as Mr Coe suggested in his talk to the meeting the day he was here) but the people will vote it by a 2/3 majority and I think the Board of Trustees will also grant it, …\" With transmittal envelope, stamps absent.

D1: May 10, 1889. 1 page letter on N&WRR Letterhead from Roanoke Virginia from W W Coe, chief engineer, about congratulations on securing some property at \"term of one third cash. … I am sorry that you did not decide to go in with us in this purchase as whether or not our line is built to the Ohio River in the near future I think the land is worth the money.\" With transmittal envelope.

D2: June 14, 1889. 1 page letter on N&WRR Letterhead from Roanoke Virginia from W W Coe, chief engineer, about paying the bill of Mr Jones for use of a carriage going to hanging Rock. With transmittal envelope.

E1: June 11, 1889. 1 page letter signed by Joseph Doran (a partner listed at upper left) on the letterhead of the John C Bullitt law offices of Philadelphia Pennsylvania. About mortgage and notes on a purchase near Ironton. \"I am not familiar with the location or description of the property by metes and bonds.\"

E2: July 1, 1889. 1 page letter signed by Joseph Doran (a partner listed at upper left) on the letterhead of the John C Bullitt law offices of Philadelphia Pennsylvania. About getting a form for the right of way deed, wants the rights in his name and \"The West Virginia & Ironton Railroad Company has not yet extended its proposed line into Ohio. When the chartered rights have been extended and the right secured from West Virginia to build into Ohio then we can take the question up again in light of the suggestions contained in your letter\". With transmittal envelope.

F1: September 25, 1889. 1 page letter on the letterhead of Dingee & Stavers, bankers and brokers of Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Letter signed by J H Dingee \"I am coming down to Ceredo and Ironton, I hope by the latter part of next month, and will then take a look at the land on the Ohio side of the river and confer with you fully about it. I am having the correction made in the deed to be given by Ferguson so as to bring us down to the low water mark of the Ohio River.\" With transmittal envelope.

F2: October 7, 1889. 1 page letter on the letterhead of Dingee & Stavers, bankers and brokers of Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Letter signed by J H Dingee \"Your letter … in relation to the Ironton & Petersburg Street Railway is received. This looks very well. I have obtained consent to all parties interested in the purchase of the Campbell farm, with the exception of Mr S B Haupt, ….\" No envelope.

G1: April 5, 1890. 1 page letter on N&WRR Letterhead from Roanoke Virginia from W W Coe, chief engineer, about cover letter for a draft (not there, of course)

G2: June 10, 1890. 1 page letter on N&WRR Letterhead from Roanoke Virginia from William D Jamey, chief engineer, about a description of the \"additional 10 feet width required from Charles Campbell Trustee section 30 township 1 range 18 being a strip of land on the north east side of the right of way recently purchased from said Charles Campbell by the WVA&IRR (West Virginia & Ironton RR), from the line of land line of Joseph Gilley, 10 feet wide by 415 feet long containing 95/1000 acres.\" With transmittal envelope postmarked at Ceredo West Virginia.

These papers were among a small bundle of estate papers of William Henry Enochs (1842-1893), A civil war veteran in the Second Regiment Ohio Infantry and then the West Virginia Infantry where he was promoted to Colonel and brevetted Brigadier General of Volunteers on March 13, 1865. He became a lawyer in Ironton Ohio. Later a member of the House of Representatives in Congress 1891 to 1893. This was one full term and a wee bit of a second before he died in office. He represented a district in southern Ohio in the area near Ironton Portsmouth, etc. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
