Antique 1886 Civil War Veteran GAR

Grand Army Republic

Gilt Bronze Medal With Ranking Bar

This medal is in addition toa box of medals that I sold earlier in the year that were handed down by myGrandparents.

This one was found in asmall box which I am including in the sale. The Boxmeasures approximately 2 x 3 x 1 inches and has the address of “Dr. CROWELLOPT. CO., Jewelers & Opticians; 822 Main Street. Riverside, Cal”

Also in the box, andincluded, is an OHIO 1915 Gold and BlackRibbon, maybe from the Battleship Ohio.

This 1886 version of the GAR medal is patented May 4, 1886. This Medal has whatI think they call a rank bar between the Eagle at the top and the star on thebottom. The ribbon between the rank barand ribbon on the star is in pretty good condition, considering it’s age!

On the back of the eagle itsays:

Pat.May 4, 1886

June22, 1866

I\'ve taken the following from my other listings and \'borrowed\' the info from a fellow er:\"Thebadge is of bronze, made from cannons captured in battle during the Civil War,and is in a form of a five-pointed star, similar in design to the two hundredMedals of Honor, authorized by an act of Congress to be given to the soldiersand sailors most distinguished for meritorious and gallant conduct during theCivil War.

THE OBVERSE -- in the center of the badge is the figure of the goddess ofliberty, representing loyalty. On either side, a soldier and a sailor claspinghands, representing fraternity, and two children receiving benediction andassurance of protection from the comrades, representing charity. On each sideof the group is the National Flag and the Eagle, representing freedom; and the axe,or bundle of rods, or fasco, representing Union. In each point of the star isthe insignia of the various branches of service -- the bugle for infantry, thecrossed cannons for artillery, the crossed muskets for marines, the crossedsabers for cavalry, and the anchor for the sailors. Over the central groups arethe words \"Grand Army of the Republic\" and under \"1861 --Veterans -- 1866\" commemorating the commencement and close of therebellion and also the date of organization of the Order.THE REVERSE SIDE represents a branch of laurel, the crown and reward of thebrave, in each point of the star. The National Shield is in the center, surrounded by the twenty-four recognized Corps Badges, numerically arranged, each on a keystone and all linked together, showing they are united and willguard and protect the shield of the nation. Around the center is a circle ofstars representing the states of the union comprising the Grand Army of theRepublic.\"

Ofall the badges I\'ve sold on , this one is in the best condition. I’m sellingall of these items together because, either my Mother or Grandmother put themtogether in this box so they should be sold together.
