This simpified design replaced the more ornate 1877 pattern and was used through WW2. It had a plain black finished steel D-guard with a eared back strap and a contoured wooden grip. The rivet in the guard retains part of a leather finger loop. The blade has an \"accountability number\" and the back strap has the Koishikawa (Tokyo) arsenal mark along with other unknown marks.
