Up for sale is a very hard to find John Deere Unstyled L. This is the 614th unstyled L made. Some books list this serial # as a 1937 and some has a 1938 so I\'m going to go with the John Deere Data Book which lists it has a 1938. Starts and runs good. There is a small repair to the block which is to the back and you don\'t see it at first but wanted to point that out (see picture). There are old time blacksmith shops we know of which can repair this like new if you ever wish to do that and we can forward you some names. The front and rear tires are average.

From theJohn Deere Two-Cylinder Tractor Buyer’s Guide - “The small L was a John Deere utility tractor highly prized by collectors. Deere made the L over a nine-year span (1937-1946) and these tractors filled a real niche in the farmer’s tractor requirements. They were excellent cultivating and utility machines of about 10hp. The L was an upgrade of the Model 62, which was an upgrade of the Model Y. The layout of the new design was unique. The engine was slightly offset to the left, and the driver’s seat to the right. The steering shaft and the wheel were also offset to the left, rather than being directly in front of the driver. The engine was mounted with the crankshaft in line with the direction of travel and the cylinders vertical, instead of with a transverse crank and horizontal cylinders, as on the other Deere two-cylinders. It was also mounted quite a bit farther forward than was the Deere tradition, upon a unique dual shaft reached from the clutch back to the transmission, positioned between the driver’s feet.

Other breaks with tradition on the baby Deere were a gasoline-only engine, a foot-operated clutch, individual rear wheel brakes with the pedals together on the right side, and a side valve engine. On the whole, the new tractor was much more “conventional” than the rest of the Deere line. It was the first of a new breed of lightweight utility tractors, such as the Allis-Chalmers B, the Massey Pony, and the Farmall A.”
