Offered for sale is a 1944 GMC DUKW AMPHIBIOUS MILITARY VEHICLE/VESSEL. These were used in WWII, though I don’t know specifically about this one. This vehicle Runs, Drives, and Swims! It will do about 55 MPH on the highway which makes it faster than most boats on land and IT GOES BETTER THAN ANY TRUCK IN THE WATER! It has a diesel engine (most likely from a pick-up), not original military. It has an automatic fire suppression system which I think is a requirement for the Coast Guard in order to be a Passenger Vessel. Passenger Vessels have to be inspected by the Coast Guard every 5 years and the current Inspection is still valid thru March of 2014.

The vehicle was in operation doing Duck Tours in Nashville, TN. Apparently the previous owner had a $125K note on the vehicle and didn‘t pay, so it was repossessed and we bought it. It is currently located at Smith Mountain Lake in Moneta, VA. We intended to start SML Duck Tours here at the lake and have the Virginia LLC set up which can be included as part of the sale if the purchaser wants. I have realized that to get it into operation will require more time and energy than I can put in now.

When we purchased it, it had the top and seats, radio, and everything hooked up. However we had to remove all of that in order to insure it as an antique collector vehicle. These are all stored in my barn and go with the vehicle. It is currently insured by Haggerty Insurance with $50,000 replacement coverage for $329 per year and a $40 marine rider to cover it in the water.

It is currently registered as an antique vehicle and we have clean clear title. We have used it recreationally for the past 2 years and it is Very Cool! People stop to talk and take pictures anywhere we go by land or water. We drive over to friends house and then head down the boat ramp to go for cocktail cruise. It’s very popular with kids at birthday parties. We also load up all of our camping supplies and then ride down the boat ramp, cruise down the lake, and drive up on the beach at the mountain where we camp.

We have changed the oil and done a little maintenance and tried to learn what we could about it, but surely there are people who know a lot more about these vehicles than I do. It starts right up and runs fine. The Speedometer, Fuel Gauge, Temp Gauge all work. We carry an air horn because the regular horn doesn’t work. The headlights, turn signals, and brake lights all worked, but the last time I tried to turn on the headlights, they didn’t come on. I haven’t look to see why. There were navigation lights, but the anchor light was on the roof that we took off and we never put another one on.. There is some surface rust and some bubbling around seams also. It takes on a little water when cruising as I understand they all do. There are 5 bilge pumps which cut on for a few seconds and pump it right out.

The propeller and rudder is right behind the real axle. There are levers to engage the rear wheels and/or the front wheels and/or the propeller or any combination. The steering wheel and transmission operate it on land or water.
