Up for sale a 1954 Gibson ES-295 in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. Considered an upscale version of the ES-175 that featured the same Goldtop finish as the Les Paul of the same era, the ES-295 is a visually stunning and elegant instrument suitable for a wide range of genres. Of course any description of an ES-295 is indelibly linked to Scotty Moore and his expert guitar work with at the time up and coming rock n roll star Elvis Presley. Subsequently dubbed the ultimate rockabilly guitar, you simply can\'t do much better than the ES-295 for incredibly meaty and powerful P-90 tones. The fully hollow maple body delivers great clarity and top end, propelled by the midrange richness and incredible harmonic content of the P-90 pair. Very dynamic and sweet, this ES-295 pairs well with any tube amp of the era for everything from clean, complex jazz voicings to smoothly overdriven golden era country twang and rockabilly rumble. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike\'s Guitar Bar and currently strung with flatwound 12-52 strings, this ES-295 delivers a wide palette of instantly recognizable 1950s Gibson tones!
This is a one-owner instrument, and while it retains all of its original gold hardware and electronics, the body and neck have been professionally refinished. Although the profession of the original owner is unknown to us, what we do know is that after retirement he decided to restore his original ES-295 as a hobby and the result is one of the most accurate and flawless Goldtop finishes we\'ve seen here at Mike & Mike\'s Guitar Bar. He completely nailed the color and did an excellent job protecting the stock body binding in the process. The nitro lacquer has the perfect amount of metalflake in the paint and the lustrous sheen of a new instrument when paired with the 100% original hardware which is in truly incredible shape. There are a few light flecks of gold on the face of the headstock and a very small amount of bleed over from the gold to the edges of the headstock face where it slopes down towards the nut, but overall this is a completely professional and very well executed refinish.
The neck has a substantial and full medium C profile that borders on the chunkier side of things, with shoulders that slope back towards the center of the profile gradually, yet noticeably. The profile gets slightly deeper in the higher registers of the fretboard, but on the whole stays fairly uniformly deep and consistently shaped. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard sports split parallelogram inlay with original \"banjo\" fretwire, so called for its very slender width. The frets are in absolutely stunning condition, with their full original height, well rounded crowns, and only the lightest wear in the first position, almost exclusively beneath the B string. The 1 11/16\" nut width is ideally spaced for chording and accurate lead lines, not to mention fingerstyle playing. On the headstock, the original gold plated Kluson Deluxe tuners are intact with the original swirly pearloid tulip buttons. The gold plating on the tuning keys is truly spectacular, and the tuners turn smoothly with all flathead mounting screws present and accounted for.
On the body, all of the electronics work as they should, and the wiring harness boasts original pots and paper-in-oil tone capacitors. The creamy thermo-formed plastic \"dog ear\" P-90 covers are intact, as well as the gold pickup riser at the bridge, only seen on this model. The stock gold \"Pat. Pending\" trapeze wraparound tailpiece is present, with gold plating that shows as little wear as the tuners. All of the other original hardware is present as well, with the stock amber bell knobs, pickguard with flower motif and the all important amber switch tip. Visible through the bass side F hole, the original Gibson label is completely intact with clear text. Since the refinish, the instrument has presumably seen very little use, as there are only a few light scuffs on the back and no other notable wear to report. There is one tiny binding crack on the inside edge of the florentine cutaway, but this has been glued back flush with the rest of the stock binding and is purely cosmetic.Given the almost nonexistent fretwear and stunning condition of the gold hardware, it\'s safe to assume that the guitar wasn\'t refinished out of necessity, but simply as a fun project to pass the time!
An extremely heavy duty Cedar Creek USA made hardhsell case is included. The case is in great shape, with one spot of wear on the lid near the headstock section, all original latches intact and a plush, purple velvet interior.
