Many people are fascinated by railroads. At one time, railroads were connected to most aspects of community and economic life, and almost everyone had the experience of taking the train to some distant destination. Today, railroads are still a vital part of the nation\'s commerce, but they have largely evolved into less publicly visible movers of freight. For the most part, the romance and glory of the great age of railroads has passed from the scene.
One way of remembering this bygone era is through collecting artifacts that have survived the years. Most railroad lines were, and still are large enterprises requiring vast amounts of material and equipment to operate. While much of this material and equipment like locomotives, cars, buildings, etc. are \"collectible\" for only a small number of people and organizations with the resources to maintain them, smaller items like lanterns, china, paper, and locks are well within the reach of individual collectors. Therefore, many people seek out such items -- often called \"railroadiana\" -- at sales, garage sales, antique shows and \"collector events\".
COLLECTING RAILROAD RELATED PHOTOS & SLIDES
Railroadiana collectors love photos. Photos of old railway stations, rolling stock, cabooses, railyards, roundhouses, and especially steam and diesel locomotives. Postcards, prints and photo books are popular, but slides (and negatives) have been the dominant medium in railroad photography for decades. Many railfans, including famous rail photographers like Lucius Beebe and O. Winston Link, have spent their lives documenting specific railroads, routes, and locomotive ADDED TO THE IMAGE >PONYBOYNOL< IS NOT EXHIBITED ON THE ACTUAL EXAMPLE YOU WILL RECEIVE, BUT SIMPLY AN EFFORT TO PREVENT ORIGINAL BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPH MEASURES 3\" WIDE x 4.25\" TALL ~ MOUNTED TO AN 8.5 x 10.5 PAPER STOCK ALBUM SHEET.

HISTORY ~ The TENNESSEE RAILROAD
The Tennessee Railroad was a short line standard gauge common carrier railroad running from Oneida, Tennessee to Fork Mountain, Tennessee. Reorganized in 1973 by the Southern Railway as the Tennessee Railway, it remains a subsidiary of the Norfolk Southern Corporation.
Sold at foreclosure on Valentines Day in 1918, the Tennessee Railway never was a financial powerhouse. In 1959, the first petition for abandonment was filed, but the coal business picked up and it was withdrawn. In 1973, with the railroad in receivership, the line became part of the Southern Railway. In the years following, Southern upgraded the line with new ties and rail, daylighted the tunnel near Oneida, and streamlined operations to make the line an important feeder for coal traffic.
As Environmental regulations became stricter, and large low-sulfur coal reserves were discovered in Wyomings Powder River Basin, coal mining operations in the area began to play out. By 2005, it appeared the Tennessee was again doomed when Southern Railway successor Norfolk Southern filed to abandon the line, but thanks to National Coal Corporation, the line was purchased with hopes that the coal mining industry would once again use this route. National Coal originally selected the Watco Companies to manage and operate the line, but only one train ran in 2006. Since then the line has been inactive. In 2008, a company known as the New River Railway began operating passenger excursion trains over various parts of the line. In 1991, American country music band The Desert Rose Band filmed part of their music video for the single \"You Can Go Home\" at the Tennessee Railroad USE THE \"CONTACT SELLER\" FUNCTION TO CONTACT US AND RESOLVE ANY QUESTIONS BEFORE offerDING PLEASE USE THE SHIPPING CALCULATOR TO DETERMINE FIRST CLASS PARCEL SHIPPING RATESINTERNATIONAL SHIPPING AVAILABLE BY PRIORITY MAIL INTERNATIONAL ONLY ~ CONTACT US FOR A RATE QUOTE BEFORE offerDING ~ NO FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL PARCEL SHIPPING
