1960s Custom Kraft by Kay Super Zapp Vintage Electric Guitar Valco Supro w/hc:
$1249.99

Up for sale, a 1960s Custom Kraft \"Super Zapp\" in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. This rare model was only produced for a couple short years in the late 1960s as a collaboration between the Valco company and Kay. Valco (best known for their Supro and National brands) didn\'t have the manufacturing capability for producing hollowbody guitars, so the body of this guitar was manufactured by Kay and mated with a neck produced by Valco. Still with me? Cool! Let\'s continue: Custom Kraft was a brand name created exclusively for the St Louis Music corp, one of the bigger instrument distributors in their day, and this lovely Kay/Valco hybrid is one of the rarest and most deluxe models produced under this banner!
The tone is classic Valco, with the same raucous, oversized single coils seen in the Supro and National guitars of the day. The pickups are very dynamic and responsive to your most subtle tone shifts, with plenty of bite and twang in the bridge position and warmer, more wooly tones at the neck. The hollow maple body adds more low end heft to the tone and softens the attack of the instrument as well, making for one of the most pleasing sounding and fun to play vintage Valco guitars! Top everything off with a very responsive vibrato unit and you\'ve got one very cool guitar! The Super Zapp has recently come to prominence in the hands of Dan Auerbach from the Black Keys, and rest assured, you can easily coax fuzzed out splendor and grit out of this guitar just like Auerbach does.
The neck is very comfortable and intuitive, with a 24 3/4\" scale length and a nut width just shy of 1 3/4\". The profile is a slender C and the wide nut helps the neck feel substantial and sturdy, with perfect spacing for easy chording, accurate leads, and even fingerpicking if you desire. The rosewood fretboard boasts pearloid block inlays and original fretwire that retains its full, original height, with light wear in the first position (particularly beneath the G and B strings) and virtually no wear further up the neck. The guitar has just had a new truss rod installed, which responds far better than the original rod, making the neck straight as an arrow and very easy to play with low action and no buzzing or dead spots! The headstock retains the original tuners which were imported from Japan, and the Custom Kraft logo on the face is intact and in fantastic shape. Even the serial number sticker is present on the back of the headstock (a rarely seen feature that is almost always missing).
All of the electronics work as they should, and the vibrato is complete with the original bridge cover and screw in arm. The vibrato is extremely responsive and responds to a light touch for surfy warbles and fairly deep dives. The roller saddles on the bridge also keep everything working smoothly without impeding the vibrato action. The extra large pickguard actually extends across both sides of the body and is quite substantial, with a thickness and three dimensional quality that surpasses most guitars. The original gold knobs are intact as well. Cosmetically, this is an extremely clean instrument with a vibrant and unfaded original nitro lacquer sunburst finish. There is light patina on the edges of the pickup covers and vibrato cover, and there is light lacquer checking across the entire body. While the binding on the body is nearly flawless, there is some slight deterioration of the neck binding, particularly on the treble side of fret 7 and between frets 10-13. This doesn\'t pose a structural issue, does not impede playability, and the binding is not loose at any point on the instrument. Overall, there are a few tiny nicks and finish scratches on the body, but as the photos show, this is a particularly clean and well cared for example of a very rare guitar!
A modern hardshell case is included.
