1972 Rickenbacker 4001 Vintage Electric Bass Guitar Fireglo Toaster Pickup w/hc:
$3899.99

Up for sale, a 1972 Rickenbacker 4001 in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This vintage 4001 has numerous features consistent with the 1969-72 transitional era including the shorter headstock, Grover \"Cracker Jack box\" tuning machines, clear acrylic finger rest, crushed glass triangular inlays, maple headstock wings, and three screw bridge/tailpiece design. A visually stunning and lovingly played instrument, this 4001 has the rich midrange, full low end, and utterly distinct tonal character that defines a Ric bass. From snarl to thump, it\'s easy to dial in the perfect amount of top end presence and balance those frequencies with thick low end. This is a powerful sounding instrument that has a deep acoustic resonance which translates well through the pickups. At 9lbs 2oz, this bass has a nice medium weight too, and we\'ve had it professionally setup here at Mike & Mike\'s Guitar Bar with 45-100 roundwound strings.

The neck has a medium D shape that flattens out a bit near the center of the profile, with nice round shoulders that keep the neck feeling substantial. There is light curly figuring in the maple on the neck, and the edges of the profile have worn down to the bare maple between frets 1-5 for an extremely comfortable and honestly worn in feel. The bass has been cleanly refretted with fretwire that has vintage width but notably more height and crown for decades of future life. Currently, these frets show virtually no wear and play cleanly in all registers with no buzzing or dead spots. The nut measures 1 11/16\" in width, and the original lucite truss rod cover is intact, as well as the stock Grover tuning machines and previously noted maple headstock wings, which replaced the walnut wings used until \'72.

All of the electronics work as they should, and the wiring harness was replaced in the past with pots that adhere to factory spec and high quality tone capacitors. The bass was at one time wired for active electronics, so there is a clean 9V battery-sized route hidden under the pickguard. The edge of the control cavity nearest to the Rick-o-Sound jack plate was also routed slightly wider to accommodate the new pots. While the neck position Toaster Top pickup is original to the bass, the bridge pickup is an era correct genuine Rickenbacker replacement. Other hardware of note includes a replacement single-ply white pickguard and more modern bridge/tailpiece with five mounting holes (while the original three bridge mounting holes were used, the other two mounting holes present on this tailpiece were left empty so as to not add any unnecessary holes to this vintage bass). The stereo jack plate is a genuine Rickenbacker part, but dates to the 1980s.

In terms of cosmetics, this bass retains its original vibrant and warm Fireglo finish with no touchup or overspray. \"Fire\" is written in pencil in the neck pickup cavity confirming the factory finish, which is framed on the top of the bass by the original checkerboard binding. There is modest buckle rash on the back of the bass, as well as wear down to the bare maple along the back edge of the bass side body horn, and between the pickguard edge and bridge pickup bezel (from heavy picking/plucking in the past, no doubt).

This vintage Rickenbacker 4001 is a lovingly played and properly maintained vintage piece with a powerful, soulful voice!

A vintage hardshell case is included.
