Greetings! For your consideration I offer this vintage soprano cornet in E-flat, marked \"Jules DeVere / Paris / Montgomery Ward / Sole Agents / Chicago\" on the bell. Assembly numbers \"49/50/51\" stamped on the valve casings indicate that this was the 17th cornet in this particular production batch. \"L\" stamped on 2nd casing could be a manufacturer\'s marking, but the maker is lost at this late date; probably one of the many French jobbers that supplied vast numbers of inexpensive cornets to American music retailers for stenciling. Bore measures to .424\" (Small bore) through the valve block, measured on my dial caliper. Construction is yellow brass overall with German silver valve buttons. I would assume that this was one of Montgomery Ward\'s catalog items around the turn of the 20th century. This instrument plays at HIGH PITCH, approximately A=452-456VPS, the 19th-century standard for military-style bands. The tuning shank is long enough so that it can be pulled for playing at modern low pitch, A=440. NOTE that this instrument will require a vintage short-shank mouthpiece with a deep-V cup; a long-shank C-cup mouthpiece such as a Bach will not give satisfactory results. Trust me on this; I\'ve been playing antique Eb cornets for 15 years.

CONDITION: This instrument is in fair-to-good condition overall. There have been some rudimentary dent repairs made, and there are a number of dents/dings. See pics. I do not detect any rot or significant corrosion (what looks like corrosion on the upper mouthpipe bend is actually masking tape residue where a tag was removed.) Tuning shank and 1st slide pull; 3rd slide is stuck and I\'m not messing with it. The 2nd slide is not removable, typical on Eb cornets of this period, so the crook will need to be unsoldered to remove the dents. Lyre mount screw is missing, as is the 3rd slide pull knob. All caps turn. Valve action is smooth and fast, although the original springs are a bit heavy for my liking. The unplated valves have a some staining, wear and blow-by but the instrument plays surprisingly well as-is. It would probably be a good choice for anyone who plays in a recreated Victorian-era band (post-Civil War, as this style of instrument is not correct for Civil War bands) and is looking for a very affordable instrument that plays well.

ACCESSORIES: None. No case or mouthpiece. You get exactly what is pictured; see pictures.

PLAYING QUALITIES: This horn plays well, much better than I expected, with a bright but sweet tone and good response, and quite manageable intonation. It plays at HIGH PITCH (A=452) but can easily be tuned to modern Low Pitch (A=440) using the mouthpipe tuning shank. NOTE that I make no representations made about its suitability for your intended use. WYSIWYG.
