This is a magnificent original ANCIENT CHINESE NEOLITHIC POTTERY JAR, Majiayao culture, Machang phase, ca. 2300–2050 B.C., Gansu or Qinghai Province, China.

This rare ancient pottery jar measures 12” high, 11” wide (at the handles), and is extensively decorated on the upper half in geometric patterns in shades of brown, cream and dark orange. There are surface abrasions, soil and natural encrustations due to extreme age and wear. Similar jars sell in major antiquities galleries for over $5,000. PROVENANCE:Southern California Estate. Large and small two-handled jars, pitchers, bowls, and beakers are the most common forms produced in the Machang phase of the Majiayao (or Gansu Yangshao) culture. Decorative motifs on Machang-period wares are largely geometric and include curvilinear patterns and cross-hatching, and lozenges, triangles, circles, and squares in an endless array of combinations. These enigmatic motifs are variously interpreted: they are sometimes explained as abstract representations of natural creatures such as frogs; other hypotheses suggest that they are symbolic of either the costume worn by a shaman or the transformation he undergoes during rituals.
