AMERICAN BRASS HANDLED SABER BAYONET, BATTLE OF PALMETTO RANCH, TEXAS, 1865

This brass handled saber bayonet was found near the Rio Grande River on the Palmetto Ranch, Texas battlefield in 1892.

It is in as found condition, 24 5/8” overall length with a 20” blade & a solid one piece brass guard/handle.

The blade has light to light/medium pitting & a dark brown patina. (a good cleaning with WD-40 or CRC oil would really clean up this blade!) The brass guard has a dark bronze patina & has some black corrosion from being out in the hot Texas sun for 27 years!

It was on display in the Brownsville Texas United Confederate Veterans Museum from the 1890’s to 1929 when the museum closed down.

It comes with a family letter from the last curator of the museum who took a lot of the artifacts home with him when the museum closed down.

See the 12 pounder cannonball from the sight of Jones Texas Battery & the brass handled French short sword both also from the Battle of Palmetto Ranch & Brownsville U.C. V. Museum listed separately.
