This is an Ames Sword Company made #331 "Roman" SHORT SWORD made after the U.S. Civil War. It has an overall length of 23 3/4 inches long. The blade measures 18 1/8 incheslong. It comes with no scabbard. It has a one piece solid cast brass (or bronze) handle that was made in the style of a Roman sword. It has scalloped scales on the grip area with an ornate hilt and pommel. There are no makers marks, or proof marks, that I can see on the blade or the grip. The blade measures 1 3/8 inches wide at the hilt and tapers to 1 inch wide at the tip. The blade has a full tang that protrudes all the way through the pommel and is peened over to a tight fit. There are no cross pins or any other attachment points. The blade is in fair condition with plenty of rough grind marks and rust all over it. The grip is in excellent condition with plenty of wear evident, but no damage of any kind, and it has darkened over time to a nice even patina. This came out of a collection of Civil War era artifacts that were originally put together in the 1950's and 60's. I originally thought that this sword might be Civil War vintage, but some helpful ers helped me with the revised authentication. This sword is definitely old and not a reproduction or fake. It would make an excellent display piece in any collection for sure. Please check my other listings for more military and vintage items!
