ANTIQUE 17.5\" Buena Vista Plantation Saddle w/ \"Skeleton Key\" Stirrup Irons, Confederate Army. Original, authentic, genuine Buena Vista\'s are hard to find. This is a rarity, & the condition is museum quality. Buena Vista was one of the most comfortable riding saddles ever made, used by plantation overseers, country doctors, & Confederate soldiers. Leather features border tooling w/ daisy accents & \"GENUINE BUENA VISTA\" stamped on the side. Has older style makers mark, solid brass hardware, & is stuffed w/ horse hair. Due to it\'s construction, this type is believed to be an earlier version. Saddle & stirrup leathers appear to be all original. A lovely set of Civil War era stirrup irons w/ an engraved filigree design were added. Stirrups are often referred to as \"skeleton key\" irons b/c of the hand notched \"key hole\" style in the center of the stirrup. This style of stirrups were very common among plantation saddles of that era. Saddle is missing a few buttons, possibly some brass hardware, & stitching has come loose in a couple of spots. Leather is soft & flexible, but does have some very minor cracking & dry rot in areas, 1 stirrup leather has a small tear. Has been cleaned/oiled/conditioned, & rust was removed from stirrups. Almost rideable. Excellent condition for it\'s age, but is considered non-working. Collectors item, display, or décor only. Mid - late 1800\'s circa. Please check out our other items. Brief History: *The Buena Vista saddle was a popular pre-war hornless riding saddle of the Virginia\'s, which was pressed into service by their Confederate owners & used throughout the war. Due to the amount of leather used in their construction, it\'s considered unlikely that many were made during the war. After 1865, this popular saddle was once again widely made & used throughout the Southeast. The original Genuine Buena Vista saddle was made by \"Buena Vista Saddlery\" (1885-1895), in the town of Buena Vista, Rockbridge County, Virginia. The saddlery was known as the \"Blue Hills Tannery\" prior to 1885. The \"Buena Vista\" pattern was also used by other saddleries. In the early 1900\'s, B.T. Crump made the Wilbourn brand Buena Vista saddle in Buena Vista, VA. Bona Allen began making their brand of Buena Vista around 1927 in Buford, GA. They were for sale in catalogs such as; H. Kauffman, Sears & Roebuck, etc. There are still companies that make the saddle today.*All shipping is calculated according to package size, weight, & buyer location. We do combine S&H.
