<img 19th Century PAIRPOINT Celery VaseThis lovely antique celery vase is in remarkable condition for age, with no chips, cracks, breaks, or dents. The only signs of use are a pinpoint dimple in the top surface of the base, and light wear to the bottom of the circular well. The balance of the silver plating is fully intact. The glass vase is in perfect condition, and \'rings\' clearly when tapped.The piece was made by Pairpoint Glassworks in Cape Cod, circa 1880. The underside is etched with Pairpoint\'s mark, and QUADRUPLE PLATE.The tapered glass vase is lavishly etched with grapes and leaves on a vine. It sits securely in a silver-plated base, which stands on 3 ball feet. The base is decorated all around with an intricate repousse design, consisting of grapes, leaves and a curling vine.When assembled, the celery vase stands just under 7 inches in height, with a maximum diameter of 5 1/4 inches.
\'No dinner in the Victorianperiod was complete without a side of celery.For most of the nineteenth century, celery was perceived as ahigh-status food and occupied a prominent position on the diningtable. From approximately 1830 to 1890,celery was served “in the rough” with the leaves still attached, in a celeryvase made of blown or pressed glass.Together, the leafy celery and glass vase created a decorative accentfor the dining table, similar to a bouquet of antique celery vase would make a fabulous addition to a collection, and would grace any table if put to practical use.Unfortunately, my photographs don\'t do this set justice!
