DATE: 1890-1910
STYLE: Arts & Crafts
A NOTE ON THE ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT: It swept the US andGreat Britain from roughly 1880 to 1920. Craftsmanship was paramount, design was nature-inspired, and construction methods were straightforward, simple, and undisguised. They promoted a simpler, more natural, and morefunctional look, with clean lines and solid, heavy frames made of wood.Earthy, rectilinear style characterized by thick lines of oak, with exposedmortise-and-tenon joints. Wood was varnished (lacquer, shellac) but neverpainted.
A NOTE ON QUARTER SAWING: Quarter sawing means cutting at a 90-degree angle from the growth rings on a log to produce a vertical and uniformpattern grain. The grain on the face of a quarter-sawn board will be parallellines that are straight, tight and run the length of the board. Additional aestheticsinclude wavy and interlocked grains. Structural benefits to quarter-sawn oakinclude that it reduces twisting, warping and cupping, holds finishes better, and does not allow liquids to readily pass through it.During the early 20th Century, quarter sawn oak become one of the hallmarks of the Arts & Crafts style. With most furniture being plain sawn today, quarter sawn oak furniture have become prized period pieces and are therefore an important key to the true look of Arts & Crafts furniture.
A quarter sawn piece RADIATES ELEGANCE and TRADITIONAL BEAUTY.The extra work put into it is admirable and the results truly stand out. Whenyou own a traditionally- built Arts & Crafts piece, your unit will only get betterwith age, making it a heirloom that will proudly remain part of your family foryears.
CONDITION: Pleasingly unique, solidly constructed and stands on its ownmerits. Age appropriate wear including scuffs and scratches, several spotschipped off. Probably the expansion and contraction of the wood over manyyears has had some effect. This in no way undermines the structural integrityof the cabinet...it is AS STURDY AS CAN BE! Very few true antiques are inlike-new condition! Not possible to describe every scratch or ding, so pleasefeel free to ask questions. Photos are provided that should be considered aspart of the description.
NOTE THAT THE MIRROR has two distinctive flaws, which are presented inthe photos: one is in the upper center, the lesser one in the lower left corner. Upper cupboard door pulls are not attached, but these original pieces areincluded. No key for keyholes. Photo of inside of upper cabinet shows originalwood grain.
PLEASE check the photos carefully---as they say ‘a picture is worth athousand words.’
