Antique CIVIL WAR Leather Sword Knot Portapee M 1860 1840 Ames Cavalry Saber NR:
$266.50

Up for your holiday offerding pleasure, a fantastic U.S. CIVIL WAR leather sword knot for an M1860 or M1840 Cavalry Saber (such as the ones made famous by Ames, Emerson & Silver, Mansfield & Lamb, etc.). This sword knot is textbook correct, at 18.5 inches long, and 1 inch wide, and with two sliding loops. It is a rare survivor and it’s getting pretty rare finding one like it. I bought this sword knot at a Civil War antique show a few years back, and I remember the dealer saying to me, “these used to be plentiful in years past, but they are slowly all being sold off - you better buy this one now, because in a few years they will all be gone.” I didn’t believe him at the time, being a novice collector, but lo and behold, when I go to Civil War shows these days, I’m hard-pressed spotting any of these sword knots at all – they are just not there anymore and I suppose they are all in personal collections!

This sword knot is in excellent original, un-used and un-issued condition and as with all leather goods of the Civil War period, the leather is a bit stiff and the tassels at the end of the knot are pretty brittle and should not be manhandled. I’ve seen folks sell these sword knots and say, “you can treat the leather and \"work it\" to make it more supple” but I am skeptical that this can be done, I wouldn\'t ever recommend that myself, and in fact if I wanted a sword knot that I could actually use, I’d just buy a reproduction one. Having said all that, take a look at the many photos I list below and see where I am twisting the leather strap to show you how supple it actually still is – it’s the tassels that are the brittle part and they should be handled very carefully - a couple of the tassel strands have gone to time and a some of the strand edges show a bit of loss, but on the whole the condition of the sword knot is great and this wear is perfectly normal and acceptable for an original Civil War sword knot.

With respect to pricing, I thought you’d be interested to see a screen capture of the Lewis Civil War Collectibles Identification and Price Guide, which shows these sword knots going for $172 – $325 at sale depending on condition. But, although this sword knot is worth at least a couple of hundred dollars, I will start the sale at the pretty ridiculous price of $9.99 so everyone can have a chance to get in there and make a offer! Good luck neighbors, happy holidays, and also take a look at my many other sales this week for other quality items, including authentic antique police badges!
