Enterprise No. 9 Double Wheel Coffee Grinder Patd 1873 Store Provenance

Item Description

Check out this great old coffee grinder. Recently picked the piece up at an sale. Made by Enterprise which was set up in Philadelphia, PA. Has double wheels. Each is 19" in diameter. This is not your smaller coffee grinder. The first year that double wheel grinders was made was December 1873 per the Kovel's guide. Both the wheels have Patented December 9, 1873 on them on this piece. Body has Patd October 22 1873 on it.

Little to no of the original paint is still on this unit. Not sure if paint was put on it or just worn down to layer below the red lead paint that was on it originally. The cast iron just looks great one way or another. Has been stored well over the years. You can see a little of the red paint where the stencil would have been on the front and inside the drawer cavity. Body and wheels are in great shape. No cracks or missing parts that I can see. The later grinder had the angled sides along the drawer and the drawer was metal. This drawer is squared out, not angled and the drawer is made of wood. There is not even a model number on the grinder which makes me think that this is an early one that was made. Anyone out there that can provide further information would be much appreciated. The knob on the drawer and the knob on the top seem to match up well, both are worn.

The lid on the top still is set tightly on the swivel bolt. Sign that says the "coffee grinder was in us at the A. Knisel Seed and General Store prior to 1904 and that part of store fixtures bought by Orol and Ellen Ledden in 1904". Then a date of May 11, 1971 typed on the bottom of the sign. Certainly can't say that the information is for real, but came with the unit so noting it here. Here is some additional information I found online about a store in South Harrison Township in Gloucester County, New Jersey For early settlers, SEE HARRISON TOWNSHIP.The following is a complete list of the first township officers and appropriations ordered: Town Clerk, Alfred W. Madara; Assessor, Thomas Borton; Collector, Jno. Wriggins; Chosen Freeholders, Charles String, Stacy W. Hazleton; Township Committee: Asa Engle, George Horner, Samuel Moore; Surveyors of Highways, Alfred French, Nathan Wilkinson; Overseers of Roads, Samuel S. Madara, Charles Stearns, Robert Crawford; Commissioners of Appeals, Wm. S. Mattmots, Chas. Steward, Joseph Horner; Judge of Election, Amos T. Eastlack; Inspectors of Elections, Peter K. Eldridge, Henry Moncrief; Justice of the Peace, John W. Bates; Constable (for three years) Samuel R. Devault; Overseer of Poor, Samuel R. Devault; Pound-Keepers, Jos. C. Horner, Patrick Connelly, Jobs B. Porch. Appropriations for roads, $900; for poor, $100, for incidentals, $300.HARRISONVILLE-This village is located on the southwest border of the township, about four miles from Mullica Hill, and named in honor of General William H. Harrison, the hero of Tippecanoe. The place was formerly called Coletown, and in 1844 assumed the present name, by which it is known at the post-office department. In 1835 there were only nine dwellings within the present limits of the village. These were the houses of Martha Cole, Samuel Cole, John Howey, William Mounce, Thomas Cole, Susan Pimm, John Fogg, Nathan Gaunt, and Israel Kirby. Andrew Knisel, John Davis, John Howey, Isaac Ridway, Joseph Cheadle, and George Horner were other old settlers here. The grist- and saw-mills were built in 1810 by Thomas Cole, and now owned by Parker D. Lippincott. The pioneer store of the town was kept by John Fogg, and the second store, at what is now Harrisonville, was opened for business in 1848 by James Saunders, in the building now occupied by Halderman & Hazelton. Isaac Lock also had a store on the corner now occupied by Riggin. Lock commenced here in 1855. Several other parties have kept store here, and at different times. The store of Lydia Lippincott, now Lydia Haines, was converted into a dwelling, and is now occupied by Dr. Stanger. The pioneer wheelwright of Harrisonville was Nathan Gaunt, who was succeeded by Asa Cole. The business is now carried on at the same place by William Ladow, who is also engaged in the general blacksmithing business.

I acquired the piece in Southern New Jersey. The wheels move smoothly. Both lock nuts are still on the wheels and match each other. The fly bolt is also there on the right wheel the wood handle is on. No hole for one on the other wheel. Dirty inside the base. Needs a good cleaning and lubricating again. You be the judge of the condition of the grinder teeth. Not sure if this model had one or two wood handles. One is on the unit, but not tight to the wheel, so not sure if appropriate or it is just missing some washers.

The grinder is 23,5" tall, by 21" across (by handle), by 19.5" wide. Restored units have sold recently for $2,500 to over $3,000 on . So, ready for your restoration skill sets!

Item can be picked up locally or Seller will deliver the item to within 50 miles of Wilmington, DE one way. Price would be $1.25 per mile for the round trip delivery plus any tolls/parking fees.
