Antique Full Leather Victorian Mens Hat Box - (3 Hats) - Very Large :

This is a very handsome - very large
Full Leather Mens Hat Box - that I would
date at around 1875/1900.This fine Leather Hat Box was made to carry
3 Top Hats - two would set in the bottom portion
of the case - the other would be strapped to the
interior of the lid.The leather is a very rich Mahogany in color -
in outstanding condition.The Hat Box measures 16 inches tall - to the
top of the handle. It is 10 inches in diameter across
the bottom - tapering to 14 inches across the top
of the lid.The piece is heavy at just under 8 pounds.There are leather straps and buckles on each
side connecting the body to the lid. The straps are
intact - I believe that one has been replaced somewhere
in time as it is quite stiff. The other is a bit flaky
with use.There is a leather strap that connects from the
back of the piece across the top of the lid. This strap
is supposed to connect with the lock at the front
however it is broken. There is a metal lock-plate
on the front - The piece is unlocked and I do not have
the key.This leather strap is rather flaky but fully intact.
It is frayed in the back where it connects to the body
of the box - I have placed a small piece of strapping
tape on the underside for stability.The interior of the Hat Box is quilted in a very
rich purple silk. The silk is stable except for a fray
in the lid - Photo #9. The case has a slight musty smell
from being unused for probably 100 years.This is a beautifully preserved Leather Hat Box.
There are no marks and/or numbers anywhere on
the leather - however there is a very faint V.R. under
a crown on the lock which leads me to believe
that the piece is from Great Brittan.Thank you for your interest and good luck
