Iam pleased to offer this fabulous Antique German Military Style Fife Flute 1870smade of early bakelite w/ Case!

This fife strongly resembles the fifes of the Civil War era, and is definitely a military style fife as it has the metal ferrules around each end. The fife has a 7-finger hole layout.

Most of the information I have regarding this fife is from aninstrument appraiser at the Bismark, ND Antiques Roadshow on May 31, 2014. I only have a verbal appraisal and nota written appraisal from theRoadshow but can include the ticket from the event (pictured with Fife). It\'s value with the case was appriaised at $400.00.

This fife was made near Nuremberg, Germany about 1870 of early bakelite (probably before they really knew the best formula -- thus a small bit that has flaked off near the last finger hole). This flake does not affect it\'s play and it is playable.

The metal ferrules on the ends are made with a combination of metals thought in those days to be superior to sterling silver because they did not tarnish. It is not more valuable now.

Anowner who is a flutist can play this fife. Most fifes were used with military marching units. There is no record of which units this fife was used.

The case is an unusual feature of this fife and is probably why it is in such good condition. The case is very protective of the instrument. It is leather on the outside,hasmetal ends and a metal center and the interior is lined with soft leather. It also has a leather carrying strap that measures 5\" long. It is stamped on the case hinge and the marking reads \"AMDIS D.R.G.M.\". Lid top and tube are also both stamped with a \"3\".

Fife measures approx. 14 3/4\" long by 3/4\" wide 2 3/4\" around at widest point
Case measures approx. 16 5/8\" long by 1 1/4\" wide and 4 3/8\" around.

This antique fife is in good condition for its age, showing some minimal scratching and dust from age/use and the only real damage is the flake on the last finger hole (see photos for a close-up).
