Lone Star Americana presentsfor your consideration an antique piece of genuine Americana from the equinedentistry field in the form of a Haussmann mouth gag.Haussmann is still in business today and sells an “economy” model for $199 anda “quality” model for $599.The difference in the models today is the quality of the metals as noted on“vet-n-pet DIRECT”; “the Economy model is of the same good design but is of poorer qualitymanufacture and made from cast stainless steel, as compared to high-tensilestainless steel of the Quality model. Thus the Economy model is moresusceptible to shock breakages (being dropped, etc).”This is CAST IRON, clearly marked, stamped with a patent date as well as“Chicago”. This is stamped \"Pat Oct 22 895\" (as in 1895) and one sidestill has remnants of the original silver paint with the other side showingmore rust and wear.Note: A patent date stamp does not mean that it is from that exact year;however, manufacturer’s stamped things to let their competition know that thedesign was patented do don’t waste time copying and IS indicative as to the ageof the piece.Believe it or not, the design has NOT changed in 118 years so they really gotthis one right.This item is missing a leather strap on the bottom jaw, and both leather strapsfor the top jaw yet could easily be used even today after those straps arereplaced.The sides flare out to adjust to the width of any head and the bottom jawportion ratchets open/closed to hold the mouth open as wide as necessary forthe dental work to be completed without fear of being bitten
