Straight from local estate.
Dark gray stoneware cup with cover and pierced high base.Old Silla Dynasty, 5-6th century A.D.hyunpoong-mount,talon-goon, kyungsangbookde province.
Discovered in autumn 1959.Total height: 18.5 cm
Diameter: 16cm
Cup height: 14.3 cm
Cover diameter: 16.7cmThis is an example in a wide field beginning with the unglazed stoneware / period of the old Silla Dynasty. The body, foot and lid are sharply articulated as enough imitating a metallic form.
The rather tall stem-foot is vertically pierced with four rows of rectangular holes. W.B. Honey has suggested these piercings were perhaps a ritual requirement for tombwares ( honey, Korean pottery book, 1947 page 4.) the tall foot, encircling two pronounced horizontal bands splays outwards at the joining of foot and body is pronounced as a band. The eight piercings of the foot were cut free hand by a sharp knife and the marks of the turning tool can still be seen on the whole surface of the body and on the base within the foot ring.
The top of the lid has a round finial which serves as a handle. On the surface of the lid is decorated with dotted slender lines which is radiated. The similarity of this type in form and techniques to some old chinese ceramics to early Japanese wares indicate a date no later than the 7th century of the Christian Era.
The high base stoneware cup is a popular vessel in the Silla Dynasty. We are deeply impressed by the high-toned and refined feeling informing the shape.
That was written by I.S. Sunwoo, Virtuosa of Fine Arts
Office of former Imperial Household.
This letter was dated 1961 and is written on fine onion skin paper.
It will be included with the purchase of this fine piece!
