Antique LARGE NIPPON VASE 12.5 inch HUMMINGBIRDS birds & lotus MORIAGE Japanese:
$80.00

Offered for offerding is a large and beautiful antique Nippon vase with a graceful amphora shape with two handles. Heavy moriage texture forms two intricately detailed hummingbirds on the front of the vase. I call them the \"angry birds\" because of the way one seems to be swooping in to attack the other. Moriage also adorns the handles, rim, and floral patterns on the vase. The handles each appear to be formed from two parts with a seam between them about halfway up. It looks like a thin crack at first, but as it\'s identical on both handles, and as the handles have no damage to the fragile moriage, I think they were just made that way, with a seam (not a crack) showing.

The vase stands 12 1/2 inches (31.8cm) tall, and is appx. 8 inches (20.3cm) wide at from handle to handle. It is heavily decorated, with a sunset scene of trees forming the backdrop behind the two hummingbirds. The top and bottom sections of the vase are green, and are adorned with pink and white lotus flowers and leaves, also with moriage details. Two layers of thick textured moriage form the hummingbirds, while single-layer moriage dots and lines adorn the handles and outline the flowers. I don\'t know the age or origin of this vase, but it appears to be from Nippon era Japan. The bottom is unmarked (see pictures 7 and 8). A U.S. quarter is shown in pictures 3 and 4, to give an accurate impression of the size at a glance.

There is some damage to this vase, but most of it is minor. The moriage texture is intact, but there is visible crazing of the glaze, and some scratches on the painted sunset scene. Worst of all, there is a large gouge (about 1/2 inch or 1.3cm) in the side of the vase. It does not go all the way through the ceramic, and there are no cracks extending from it. It is visible in picture 1, and picture 5 shows the gouge up close. The dark mark visible in the neck of the vase in picture 6 is due to the glaze not being evenly applied to the inside of the vase. The discoloration at the spout is where there is no glaze, allowing the ceramic to darken with age.
