On offer on this occasion is an outstandingmahogany breakfront secretary/china cabinet/desk/bookcase, made by famed Maddox“Mad-Ox” Tables of Jamestown, NY. Circa 1925.

Dimensions: Height 6 feet 5 inches, width 311/2 inches, depth 16 inches.

This Colonial Revival Governor Winthrop style secretaryhas refined lines and exceptional workmanship.The top is a glass doorbookcase/china cabinet with a well-proportioned pediment and finial. Three interior lights for each of the shelves. Slant frontopens to fully fitted interior. Fan carved center drawer with additional drawersand open compartments. Three large drawer feature serpentine (or \"ox bow\") front; ball and claw front and backfeet.

The Maddox Table Company began operation in 1898. It ceasedoperation around 1985. It was founded by William Maddox, son of an Englishimmigrant, who invented a variety of furniture making machines, which he soldto manufacturers throughout the United States.

Mr. Maddox owed much of his success as a table manufacturer tohis invention of a machine for polishing wooden tabletops. One of the firstfurniture manufacturers in the United States to trademark his products, in1898, Mr. Maddox sent a showman named Cedarine Allen on a world-widepromotional tour to Great Britain, Spain, Egypt, Arabia, Ceylon, Malaya, China,and Japan.

In 1919 the Maddox family sold its table making business to theShearman Brothers Lounge Company. In 1978 the company was again sold to theCrawford Furniture Manufacturing Company.
