Antique Needlepoint Tapestry Copy Of Lady & The Unicorn Allegory Of Hearing :
We are pleased to offer a beautiful needlepoint tapestry that was made as a copy of one of the famous The Lady & The Unicorn tapestries. The original set of 6 tapestries was made around 1500 in Flanders, based on drawings or cartoons drawn in Paris. Each of the first 5 tapestries represent the 5 senses - taste, hearing, smell, sight and touch; the 6th is speculated to be love. The original set is now located at Thermes de Cluny in Paris. If they look familiar, it's because they were featured on the walls of Gryffindor's Common Room in the Harry Potter movies.
This piece represents the Allegory of Hearing. A lady is seen playing a portative organ that was placed on an Oriental rug, assisted by her maid who works the bellows. As is seen in all of the original tapestries, to her left is a unicorn and to her right a monkey, each of which holds a pennant. This piece appears to be very old and was hand stitched. It was worked in needlepoint, with the hands and faces done in petit point. Please take a look at the photos and feel free to send your questions. This is a fabulous find that deserves to be displayed. It appears that it would be relatively easy to have it cleaned and blocked for framing if desired.
Condition:Overall very good - a few missing stitches and it does need cleaning. There is minimal fading. Again, please review the photos and feel free to ask questions.
Size:The canvas is 19 5/8" x 50"; the embroidered area is 16" x 38 1/2".
Shipping:Buyer to pay actual shipping costs; insurance is included as a handling fee.
