I\'ve been fortunate to buy quite often the brass needle cases in the common shapes.
This one I cannot find on any website... which usually indicates its a RARE item.. this could be the very FIRST one ever seen...then again some of you may have a box full of them !
As you can imagine I have had a few emails telling me about this item...some say its NOT a  needle holder but those folks have not been able to tell me what it is.. so this time I am listing it at 99p on a 10 day sale with ....be assured everyone I will not be ending the item early ..it will be here until the end and you make sure you get your offers in soon enough in case of a power cut or your pc crashes !
Here is an antique Victorian small miniature item made of brown celluloid / early plastic.
With the makers name W. Avery & Son Redditch.
No. 800 along with a Victorian registration diamond.
What is it though ?
A coal scuttle, a Cricket cage, a bread bin, a postbox, a crumb tray.....   I don\'t know, and having researched it, I cannot see anything similar, and what is unusual is it\'s made of celluloid plastic not the normal brass that other Avery miniature items were made from.
But look on the base, you can see for yourself it\'s a genuine W. Avery & Son item.
The little lid flips open and shut and it has engraved detail on it.
The handle of the lid is curved to match the curve of the top of the item.. its got slots in it.. so if it were a coal scuttle this surely would be all enclosed....its more like a CRICKET CAGE to me and thats what I thought it was when I first spied this in a box lot at a live sale....until I saw ther W. Avery & Son name of course then I knew it was a real RARITY if ever there was one.
It measures approx just under 2. 1/4 inches in length x just over 1 inch wide x 7/8ths inch tall sides....the handle sticks up a little further when the lid is closed...it is the right length to hold needles though.

Celluloid was invented around 1870.
