European, Carl Auer Von Welsbach was the inventor of the Pyrophoric alloy. His invention relates to a manufacture of metallic alloys having pyrophoric action and their application to the purposes of ignition and illumination, known as the flint. He discovered, that the rare earth metal cerium becomes pyrophoric if alloyed with certain other metals, in particular iron. Welsbach was known for making the large brass Auermetall Table Cigar lighter and also a mechanical pencil and pocket striker lighters. He later sold his company to Louis V. Aronson aka. Ronson in 1914. Looking like the Ronson Wonderliter, it measures about 1-7/8\" tall by 1-1/2\" wide, this rare little gem is a wonderful piece of American lighter history.
