Rare Black Forest figural chandelier
“Lustermännchen”
(“männchen” would translate to:
“little man” and “Luster” is “chandelier”)
Blackamoor
In the 19th century these kinds of chandeliers were very popular – and expensive! They came with a carved female or male figure(head), sometimes one could also find them with a mythical creature. They held candles or later light bulbs.
This chandelier has still to be turned into one by either mounting candle holders onto the antlers or by wiring it. Of course it could also be used as decoration, without any sort of light. (as you might still find them in inns, hanging above the regulars’ tables)
A Black Forest carved polychrome blackamoor chandelier with genuine 6 points antlers of a stag, 3 vintage iron chains and an iron canopy.
Figure dressed in oriental tradition, a messenger, who is holding a scroll in one of his hands.
Length: 29” – adjustable by adding or removing links
From tip of antlers to figure’s hat: 27” (measured in a straight line)
Beam: 21” long (measured in a straight line)
Maximum spread: 32”
