To a fedora collector, the name BORSALINO has a special significance. Since 1857, the \"Antica Casa\" (Original House) of Borsalino, in Alessandria, Italy, has been producing some of the finest felt hats in the world. Perhaps not as well known---in this country, at least---is that one of Borsalino\'s main rivals in the Italian hat manufacturing business was BARBISIO, in the nearby town of Sagliano Micca, which began turning out hats of significant quality in 1862. To an Italian, the Barbisio name carries as much prestige as that of Borsalino.
The hat you\'re looking at here is a fine example of the Barbisio tradition, dating possibly to the 1950s or early 1960s. And what a feast for the senses! Just run your fingers over that plush fur felt and you know you\'re dealing with high quality. That long-haired finish is usually called Peluche, or Plush, with an extra-furry texture like an expensive teddy bear. Bellissima! The stylish 2\" brim is finished in an elegant overwelt, and the pinch-front crown stands 4\" tall, set off by a 1 1/2\" hatband with an unusual and distinctive checkered weave.
The inside lining is done in cream-colored fabric, with the Barbisio Classic imprint (\"Qualita Extra Extra,\" denoting an upscale level of luxury) on the center panel under a layer of translucent oilcloth; the black leather sweatband bears the Art Deco style Barbisio logo on one side, and, on the other side, a list of all the Italian cities where the Cappellerie Barbisio (Barbisio Hat Stores) were located. The same list appears on the lining. At the front of the sweatband is repeated the word CLASSIC, an apt description of such a luxurious fedora.
Size: The tag is marked 4 1/2 (Euro) and 56 (metric); the actual inside circumference is 21 1/2\" to 21 3/4\", which means it will fit a size 6 7/8 to 7. The rear seam of the sweatband is separated, which gives it a bit of stretch.
Condition: Old and lovingly used, but still looking good for a sixty-year-old second-hand hat. Sta bene!
