Vintage, circ 1970 Cuna Indian reverse applique mola, with image of a decorative teapot set. Beautiful stitching, colors, and sewn designs of birds and flowers on the pot, with a wonderful, all over delicate applique pattern of triangles.
The 1977 copyright book \"Molas, Folk Art of the Cuna Indians\", by Ann Parker and Avon Neal, has a similar teapot mola, and they state: \"Contact with traders and the outside world has been responsible for all manner of curious objects turning up in Cuna huts. This ornate teapot probably arrived via the pages of a catalog selling houshold wares. Although Cunas are mostly boiled-in-the-bucket coffee drinkers, such a teapot could very easily be found in a native dwelling.\"
Mola is in excellent condition with no fading and no damage to the needlework. 14 1/2\" x 18\". A very nice collectible piece that would be a good addition for your mola/folk art collection.
Mola was bought from a former New York gallery owner who bought this, and others I will be listing, from a 1970\'s and earlier collection.
As most collectors of molas and folk art are aware, molas are made by the Cuna Indian women in the San Blas Islands off the coast of Panama. They are made with reverse applique, and are worn as panels in the front and back of women\'s blouses. Imagery can be from from every aspect of contemporary society: myths, every day work scenes, advertising, politics, flora and fauna, sporting events, famous people, etc.
