This beautiful cornet was made by S R Leland & Son in Worcester, Massachusetts in about 1911. Serial #846 of about 1,000 total made between 1886 until they closed in 1915. The son Frank started making these high quality cornets after the father died and they claim in their advertising to have made them in a shop in the basement level of the store on Main Street. The Eclipse line of instruments were the ones they made there and this one of them.
Nice silver plating with only a few small spots of wear and a gold wash inside the bell which is getting thin. Several dings and marks along the bell and this looks like it was dropped on the bell at one time and repaired as there are some lines on the bell and near the third valve brace where it was straightened out. There is also one area on the lead pipe that I took a photo of where it is slightly damaged next to the inlet socket. All the slides, water key, and valves are working fine and this still has good compression as all the slides pop, you can hear a hiss from the bell when the slides are pulled, and there is very little side to side play in the valves. The valves to have some pitting and are silver color. This was just cleaned, polished and new felts added. The wing bolt for the music lyre holder is missing and I noticed one of the straight pipes on the main tuning slide wiggles a little but won\'t come off so is still held partially on.
This comes with a Leland case in poor condition with broken latches and missing handle, Bb tuning shank and an Eclipse 4 mouthpiece which is in nice shape. This plays in high pitch Bb (A=454) with the tuning slide pulled out a little. Sounds great and the pitch stays pretty well centered.
