Up for sale is an Imported Model 1840 Cavalry Officer\'s Saber -Transition Blade -( Models 1840 / 1860) - that was etched at one time and has all but faded away over time , and an original scabbard . They are referred to as transition blades because they exhibit characteristics of both models . The Officer\'s always wanted a slightly lighter bladed saber than what was issued to the enlisted guy , and when the enlisted guys got hold of one then they wanted lighter and better handling sabers as well . The blade is 35\" long and 1 3/16\" wide and is 5/16\" thick at the ricasso . If you look at these measurements then look at an 1840 - usually 36\" x 1 1/4 x 3/8\" and then an 1860 -usually 34 1/2 to 35\" long x 1 1/16\" wide x 5/16\" thick at the ricasso and you begin to see why it was called a Transition Blade . The Solingen sword makers started this process with the Officer\'s blades and then when the US went to the Model 1860 some of the Solingen makers made 1860\'s and others made transition blades and still used the 1840 grip . This is a perfect example of one of the transition blades . The leather wrap and the wire wrap are 100% . The blades etching is fading away but is still visible , there are some pitting marks and some light rust areas on the blade . The hilt and pommel and the blade washer are all intact and are in quite good condition . There are dents and some rust on the scabbard but it is in good shape and fits the saber quite well . This is an as is sale with no returns and I sell and ship to the lower 48 only - so be sure before you buy . Shipping will be $30.00 if east of the Miss. River and will be actual cost if beyond .
