Original stockdated December 4th1875, Pat Reddy handwriting on reverse \"E. A. Reddy - By his Atty in fact\", signedP. Reddy, signedE. A. Reddy, PAID stamp signed James Kip, stock front is signed by Secretary W. G. Hughes and President G. H. Willard, eagle spreading wings over Flag vignette,very good condition,two stapleholes on left side, old fold marks,approx. 9 3/8” x 4 1/8”. An extremely scarce circulated stock bearing the signatures of the two Irish blooded, New England born, Old West iconic brothers.

TheDefiance Minewas first located and claimed in the early 1870s byRaphael Cuervo, a Mexican miner. The mine was originally calledthePromontorio Mine.News of the rich mine prompted a rush and it is explained in the bookDarwin, Californiaby Robert Palazzo, howfamed attorneys-gunslingersbrothersPat & Ned Reddy,with the help ofInyo County SheriffA. B. Elder,took control of the mine when theNew CosoMining Districtwas formed in 1874.Under its new management, theCuervo Minebecame theDefiance Mine, named after the fierce fight over the first claims and the settlement of New Coso became the town ofDarwin.

Pat and NedReddywere bornto Irish immigrantsin Woonsocket, Rhode Island in 1839 and 1844 respectively. Pat and Ned came to California in 1861. Ned was only 16. Pat started working as a miner in Placer County. They traveledCalifornia and Nevada looking for opportunities in mining camps such as Bodie, Virginia City, Cerro Gordo, Panamint and Darwin.The brothers quickly started rising to prosperity after their arrival in Aurora in 1863. In 1865 Pat worked as a notary in Inyo County seat Independence. Having lost an arm during a gunfight, Pat was enrolled in 1867 as a member of the California bar. He was arguably the most successful criminal defense attorney in 19th century California, purportedly defending one hundred accused murderers without losing a case. Pat laterbecameCalifornia\'s 4th State Senate districtSenator (Sacramento Valley). Ned would sometimes stay in the mining towns to protect the brothers\' interests until the next venture. He was a saloon-keeper in Darwin. In 1884 Ned becameCaptain of the Guard at the San Quentin State Prison and was later named Superintendent of the California Board of Health. While renown as a fierce gunslinger, Ned\'s reputation was that of a kind and generous man with exemplary service to the State and People of California by the time of his death in 1901.
