The value of this antique is in the patina ofthe box, the age of the scales and the plethora of weights.

Boxdimensions: 9 ¼” x 5 1/4” x 2”. Box isvery old and in good to fair condition for its age. (See photos); note the wirehinges; red cloth inside bottom.

The yellow seal of the W&T Avery Ltd Birminghamcompany is damaged. Thecompany was founded in the early 18th century and took the name W & T Averyin 1818. (See photos)

Span of main balance beam is 7 inches. Pans aremade of copper or brass and measure 3 1/8 inches diameter. The metal pan chainsare in fair shape and on one side one chain is detached and short.

The26 weights included are mismatched. One set of four appear to be made of brassand may have been a set: the largest is imprinted TROY with weights of 4, 2, 1?and ½ oz. Another set of three weights are cup shapes. Another set of eight with finger hold projections have weightsin ounces . There is another set of ninewith finger hold projections with weights in ounces one of which is markedtroy. A set of two appear to me made of iron or steel and have a large 1 in thecenter

Twosets of spare pans are made of copper 2 1/2 inches diameter and bronze 2 inchesdiameter; neither have chains. There are two extra balance beams 5 ¾ incheslong
