This is quite an interesting piece. We may not be able to tell youexactlywhat it was used for, but we can tell you what it appears to be and where it was from!
We purchased a large amount of few Phyllis K. White pieces. Phyllis is/wasan Ink and Painter: one of many talented women (mostly) working in animation who seldom received credit for their work. She worked at Filmation, Walt Disney (The Great Mouse Detective, The Black Cauldron), Hanna Barbera (Smurfs and others), Sullivan/Bluth Productions (Secret of Nimh, Sword and the Sorcerer, Dragon’s Lair video game, American Tale) and Celine Miles Studio where she restored cels from Fantasia, worked on collector cels for Warner Brothers and worked on Xanadu the motion picture.
This cel appears to have been made with the standard method used prior to CAPS. Back then a drawing was \"xeroxed\" onto the clear acetate. The final step was to paint the back - clearly the painting part was not completed for this cel. We\'re thinking perhaps it was made from original material used in the film and then used by Phyllis as a reference to restore a Fantasia cel. Another possibility is that perhaps it is a xerox of the cel she was working on. Or it may have been the basis for a limited edition cel that never came to be.
